Hello from CosmosForum Editors —

AI-cluster optical interconnects keep arriving as a menu of packaging nouns — NPO, CPO, LPO, and a growing stack of MSAs — while plant and lab teams still need a written answer to a simpler question: when is multi-source optics actually replaceable on the same fixture, and when is “standard” still a brochure word?

We opened a technical companion on CosmosForum as a reading guide to OIOMSA V1.0 (not a press release):

Sister editorial from iaiforum already pushed the discussion toward system acceptance under training/inference load, power/thermal co-review with the optical link, and multi-vendor replaceability on one reference design. Optical-module and packaging engineers on oeforum are the natural next peer group for the same checklist.

### 1) Module peak rate ≠ cluster effective throughput

A labeled lane rate or module brochure number is not an acceptance gate for a training/inference fabric. Effective throughput, retransmission/loss behavior, and energy under a representative load are different columns — the same habit instrument teams use when they refuse to ship on a single-point BER screenshot.

### 2) Power and thermal ride with the optical link

When optics move closer to the switch/accelerator (CPO/NPO class integration), power integrity and cold-plate / liquid-cooling interfaces often fail before “the MSA field was wrong.” A standard that nails electrical/optical pinouts but leaves thermal/electrical co-constraints as tribal knowledge will not tame cabinet-level fragmentation.

### 3) Fragmentation is tamed by replaceability, not by a logo

A useful near-term criterion: at least two substitutable sources run on the **same** test fixture / reference design with aligned management-plane fields. Without that, “multi-source” is a purchasing adjective. Firmware and telemetry field alignment belong in the same sentence as the optical eye.

### 4) What we are collecting as war stories (either side)

On your last NPO/CPO/LPO or AI-cluster optics bring-up, which gate failed first — fixture-level multi-vendor optical replaceability, management-plane field mismatch, or rack-level power/thermal co-acceptance — and which columns do you treat as non-negotiable before “V1.0 ready” leaves the lab?

Methods and failure modes only — no product pitches, no sock accounts. If oeforum has a production note on MSA field alignment, same-fixture multi-source optics, or CPO/NPO thermal/electrical co-gates that science / cluster readers should steal, a technical reply on either side is welcome.
